WAAAGH – Mek Guns

Duke convinced me to play 40k again, and then had the audacity to make it an enjoyable game. Asshole. So for the first time in ages, I was motivated to build some things this weekend!

I’ve been inspired by this guys Mek Guns post, which is especially good since I had an entire trukk box in my bitz box. I didn’t have a Mek Gun box though, so I don’t really have any guns to use on them! I pulled out some ForgeWorld Supa Zzap Guns I bought many years ago. (partially related: The last FW I painted was from the same purchase, it was this [massive picture] flak trakk I brought to Astro 2013).

Also, some grots from the FW grots kit.

Just need to find a gun for that last carriage!

Drone – First Day Flying

Things moved quickly once our parts came in. I think that’s the story of this project — “hurry up and wait for parts”.

We both got functioning machines assembled and had to quit for the night. I then spent many hours researching software tuning, configuration, etc, because while I can’t wrap my head around volts and circuit diagrams as well as when I was in Physics 12, IĀ can understand computer software and command line stuff.

We had a minor blip where one of the calibration processes killed Russ’ ESCs, but we had 2 spares so he replaced them, re-calibrated and was all good. Then outside.

It was a cold, but clear day at Strathcona park.

We brought a camp table to put our laptops. Yeah, this hobby has laptops at the park. šŸ˜›

This is my little copter!

wpid-imag1666.jpg

Our collection of broken propellers. We dramatically dropped our prop-killing frequency when we turned off the failsafe feature. This feature keeps your motors spinning when the copter loses radio. The idea being that if it loses radio while in the air, it can slowly float to the ground. However, in our case mostly we were shutting off our receivers after it had crashed into the tennis court fence, or the tennis court tennis net, or just the ground, and having the motors still spinning meant they were snapping off.

I had one super embarrassing moment when I lost control, and it started to come down, but then …I think it lost radio, and just fell out of the sky from 20 feet…about 8 feet from a local jogger. That could have been so much worse. >.<

That fall broke one of my copter arms, which we epoxied back together (but it isn’t perfect). I also chopped off an antenna because it was floating around, so now my receiver has only 1 antenna. (which doesn’t seem to be working great) And lastly, my receiver isn’t always turning on anymore. And we don’t quite know why.

It continues to be both an interesting, and a frustrating hobby. But at least it’s a hobby that gives a good amount of research. <3 researching things. šŸ™‚

Skorne – Cataphract Incindiarii (more)

I came back to my blog after a little break over the holidays and found this picture in my media folder! Turns out I had finished my Incindiarii that I had posted about priming a while back. šŸ™‚

This was a bit of a lesson in GW washes. I love them, in general. In particular, I love that with my WMH project that they let me care a lot less about getting things perfect, and just to let it lie where it is. The army is all gold and red and sepia, so just wash the shit out of it and be done with it! I have really enjoyed painting it, just because I stopped caring about pushing the art and technique of painting for a while and just painted.
wpid-imag1637.jpg

On the other hand…when you get down in a bottle of Seraphim Sepia and are left with the dreggsĀ don’t put that on a model!! You can clearly see, even in this cell phone photo, the guy on the left is much darker than his buddies. It was a real challenge to try to bring him back up after that mistake. >.<

Actually, I think this is a work-in-progress photo still. I definitely painted the gems on their armour!

Skorne – Cataphract Incindiarii

I hope I spelled “Incindiarii” right…

I made the Arcuarii, but after playing them and reading a bunch, these flame dudes are better in a lot of ways. My army doesn’t currently have much anti-infantry, so having a bunch of flame templates to drop around is pretty nice.

Also, got to use the Basius some more!

Drone – Motors, with some control

My spare PDB didn’t come in, so I’m left with a drone that looks like this:

wpid-imag1629.jpg

That white thing in the middle is my “good enough” PDB, but it doesn’t fit in my frame. So I can’t assemble it all.

We got to the point where we were confirming incoming signals, and confirming outgoing signals, but couldn’tĀ get incoming signals to create outgoing signals. Which meant that something was going wrong in the flight controller. It turns out, that for Russ’ board at least, the wiring diagram was completely wrong. We re-wired it and got immediate success!

Russ started then to assemble his stuff for real, with lock-tight and everything, while I got my own partsĀ configured enough that once that damn PDB comes in, I’ll be in the same place he is. Shipping from Asia…

Here’s a photo of Russ’s drone, before the top plate got put on. It was wicked fun to hand-fly this thing around the room, as it’s so close to being a flyable device!

Malifaux – Arcane Emissary

I went to Malifood, and since I’d been playing the Arcane Emissary a lot in the campaign Derrick and I are playing, I wanted to finish the job I’d converted a few months ago so I could use him!

wpid-imag1625.jpg

This was a super simple paint job. Bases are as my Arcanist bases, most of the model and the gears are Mithril Silver with some Seraphim Sepia and Nuln oil over. The blue is Ice Blue, painted up in darker tones and then drybrushed over the finished silver in a cheap sort of blue OSL.

This guy is phenomenal in-game. I think I would pay 10 stones for his ability to give a (1) AP action to any non-leader within 6″. My usual crews suffer from being super slow, so being able to take an extra 4″ is really helpful! Or to force an Interact for a model that only barely made it. Or get someone to finish off someone at 1 health from afar.

Because the campaign is Henchmen only, I got to play with the Conflux upgrades this weekend too. I didn’t end up using Mei Fengs (drop a +6Ca Scrap Marker, discard to attack again) because they were on different sides of the table. Ramos (Magnetism ability, plus Construct) I tried to use against the Necropunks across the table but didn’t work. And Kaeris’ (+1 Burning for Minions and Instinctual) I used to great effect in turn 1 to draw 3 cards, but ended up needing Kaeris to leave Burning on her crew to drop Scheme Markers (Grab ‘n Drop) for points instead.

Which leaves me to believe that the “basic” Conflux upgrade might be more useful than it looks. Or, that Imbued Energies on this guy could be nice, since he’s Wk 4 as well.

Skorne – Bronzeback Titan

I picked this guy up for a decent deal (precleaned!).

wpid-imag1626.jpg

My initial thought was to paint him for Foodmachine so I’d had a fully painted 56 points out of 57 for a Morghoul1 army. The more I thought about it though, the more I didn’t want to stress that much. So I assembled him, and maybe he’ll see use at gaming Wednesday.

I need to paint those swordsmen or Arcuarii, I think. Or assemble some Incidarii. And paint them.

Drone – Letting the Magic Blue Smoke out

With the wedding done (and the ring done), Russ and I can put more attention on building our drones. The weather may stop us from flying for a bit, but building is a lot of fun! (and occasionally frustrating)

My PDB came in, which was conveniently timed for whenĀ I had more time. And it fit, unlike the last one. Here’s a photo of the correct PDB, and coincidentally the incorrect one is that white board below it.

wpid-imag1617.jpg

This is also a photo of the Magic Blue Smoke not being inside anymore. If you look carefully at the board, there are 2 black chips in the middle of it. The left chip has a hole in it. Why does it have a hole in it Craig? If you look at the right of the board, at the top is a section labelled “5V” and below that still on the edge is a section labelled “12V”. That “12V” isĀ not for 12V of input. It is for 12V of output.Ā Output. It turns out that if you put 12VĀ into theĀ output, that chip on the left sparks, andĀ the Magic Blue Smoke escapes through a hole that’s just been created. No bueno.

There’s still lots to do, so while it’s silly that I have to orderĀ yet another board, it’s fine. The board will arrive in a couple weeks, and in the meantime I’ve soldering all of my parts to theĀ wrong board (the white one), because it still works as a PDB, it’s just the wrong size. Russ, who has a working and correctly sized PDB, has screwed all of his parts onto his copter frame and has something that resembles a copter.

However, functionality wise they’re in the same place. We plugged the receiver in, plugged the battery in, bound the transmitter to the receiver and…nothing. We thought the little motors would spin up.

We assumed that something needed configuring in the flight controller (FC), so we plugged that in and started poking around. No luck. And in the meantime, Russ snapped the USB port off his FC, so now we needed to figure out how to use the bluetooth module with it. We have bluetooth modules, but I’d been waiting to figure them out. No longer…

We had some pizza and mucked about until it was time to put it all done.

I’m surprised that I’m not frustrated by my PDB exploding. I guess I’m just taking it in stride that electronics take time and patience, but it’s very unlike me. šŸ˜› I remember building a computer with my Dad in the early 1990s for the first time, and the weeks of trying new things and playing until it finally turned on without beeping endlessly at us. This is no different, except that now we have the internet (we had internet then, but it wasn’t nearly as populated!).

Skorne – Krea – In Progress

This guy was primed and sitting on my desk at the same time as the Beast Handlers, so I painted some of him with left over colours from them, mostly.

White primer again. The metal was as previous. The skin is still in progress, but right now it’s the SW Red Black, SW Amethyst and some Dheneb Stone in places to clean up spilling from other areas. The downside of deciding to keep a surface white-ish, is that when you aren’t careful with other colours, you have to fix it up later.

wpid-imag1624.jpg

I tried to use myĀ phones flash here because it was really late and there wasn’t enough light. I think while it didn’t wash out my colours, it’s still a little odd looking. Or maybe the paint job is just odd…
