Outcasts – Malifaux Child

After base coating this model, I really like it. The face has excellent features, and the clothing hangs nice, and I like the little details like where his pants cover his ankles because it’s to big.

image

I painted his hair and inner shirt Ushapti Bone, and his skin Kislev Flesh. His jacket was a 1:1 mix of Warpstone Green and Mournfang Brown, and for the pants I mixed some Vomit Brown into that mix.

This little guy has proven to be 2ss of miraculous flexibility with Tara, and I think he’ll see a place in most crews I build with her!

Outcasts – Kinda – Death Marshals

Tara wants Death Marshals, so here they are!

wpid-imag0861.jpg

I painted the coffin Vomit Brown, then mixed with Ushapti up.  Then SW Flesh Wash all over and SW Amethyst in the shadows. I’ve done a few layers of the Amethyst in the shadows. I also painted a few thin lines of Mournfang Brown along the grain of the wood to give it a little depth amongst the wood paneling. I may do some lighter colours in a similar pattern later, after I’ve finished with the Amethyst and the Marshal himself, to cover up any mistakes.

My hope is to make the Marshal himself be somewhat monochrome, so I’ve painted the same basecoat all over him. I started with Snakebite Leather mixed with Codex Grey. I did SW Heavy Body Black all over and then mixed that with Codex Grey and painted that on the raised areas. We’ll see where this goes!

Outcasts – Killjoy

I decided that I liked the new Killjoy model. The old one was so 2D and fugly that I couldn’t bring myself to give a shit about him. The new one is still ugly, but not ugly in a model sense, just in a *shudder* sense.

GMorts Chaotica did an unboxing of him, and I’m super glad he did otherwise I wouldn’t have had the forethought to magnetize his chain arm! I swore the chain was going to snap while I was cutting it off the sprue…

He probably won’t see paint for a bit – have a few other projects I’d like to get painted first, and a few summer-outside-like-things starting up!

Malifaux – Outcast Tara!

I may have mentioned winning the transparent Tara box…she needed a crew to go with her…and she ended up Outcast instead of Resser. The main reason was that I wanted to try out using the Malifaux Child with Tara, and then I found Hans in a local games store and I’ve always wanted to shoot 36″ so here we are!

image

I am still considering Resser Tara, because The Hanged is gross and looks fun to use to make your opponent cry. But I like that both the Child and Hans can be used in other crews as well!

I picked up two of the metal Death Marshals on a deal, and grew to really like the models. I cut away their faces, glued on some skull heads and sculpted some flames from their head, which I’m pretty happy about! It’s subtle, but I think much cooler than the original human heads.

Malifaux – THE NOTHING

Believe it or not, this is the first non-AdeptiCon related post I’ve written since AdeptiCon. It’s been a long back-log. 😛

I won the Nightmare Tara Transparent Edition at the AdeptiCon Story Encounter. I told Jamie, and he said he’d be happy to trade for her. I told him I was thinking of keeping her. >.>

I had originally planned to only play crews that I could build from what I had already – ie, Ramos from Mei, Hoffman from Ramos, etc. But fuck it – someone gives you a sweet set of transparent models, you play with those!

Unfortunately, I screwed up. I was so worried about frosting the outside of the Nothing Beast, I frosted the inside. >.< I was upset about it, until I had a brilliant idea to fix the problem, and have something original.

image

I’m going to paint parts of the model! So parts of it are all smokey and other parts are opaque! It’s kind of scary painting something so unique, but it’ll be awesome when it’s done!

If you have the transparent models – buy plastic glue. I picked up Tamiya Cement (but in English) and glued the Void Wretches together. So much nicer. So much less worry about creeping glue.

I also bought the Citadel Imperial Primer. It’s a paint on primer, since I wanted to prime but can’t spray. With this stage, this product began to enter “totally f’d up” territory. Apparently you have to shake the ever living shit out of this product. It starts very watery, but after shaking it’s much thicker. Let me say that again, in larger text so everybody makes sure to read it —

SHAKE IMPERIAL PRIMER VERY VERY WELL.

I didn’t on this model. I started to paint the bits and found parts of the primer sloughing off. I tore away large strips and continued painting. After a while, it seemed like it had done coming off but I didn’t trust it. I started to rub with my thumb, and all of the surfaces came away.

To be fair to this product, after I had shaken it very well and tried it on the Void Wretch bases it stuck as well as I expect primer to stick.

To continue the horrible madness of the Nothing Beast. I decided to stick it in Pine Sol for the night and to just strip it and start again. The next morning I toothbrushed the model and got most of the paint away…only to find that some of the pine sol was stuck inside the model. Facepalm. So then I try to tear apart the torso of the Nothing, and find that the plastic actually has a weaker hold than the super glue I originally used and so it ripped the plastic apart.

I rinsed the model off and put it aside. Sometimes you just have to walk away for a bit to clear your head.

That afternoon I inspected the model and decided it might be salvageable. But that if anything else went wrong, I was going to stomp on the model and go buy a new box on EBay, even if it cost me $100+.

So far it’s going pretty well. The opaque covering looks really good next to the transparent layer. The primer has stuck. The inside is not filled with fluid. And the areas that were frosted are covered. If nothing else goes wrong, this will look amazing.

Wish me luck.

AdeptiCon 2014 – Costume

I haven’t posted anything about this costume yet, and I only briefly mentioned it at GottaCon (very end of the post, talking about the costume contest).

The Outfit

I bought a simple white tank top and soaked it in tea to make it dingy. I bought a pair of blue coveralls from Marks Work Wearhouse. Steampunk goggles borrowed from my friend Russ. A leather satchel I bought at GottaCon, after I realized that the outfit needed more. I bought a really stereotyped Asian rice-picking hat and made a hammer.

Making the Hammer

The handle is from a toilet scrub brush. I twisted the scrubby bit mostly off and stuck it into the foam. Then cut 3 blocks of pink foam to rough size and glued them together.

image

There are a variety of techniques on the internet from cosplay enthusiasts on how to make a thing like this, but I didn’t have the materials, so I …did some other things.

I tried to use the lightweight filler that we used on the board, but that wasn’t filling the spaces between the pink foam enough. I tried to use an acrylic gel medium that I had lying around, but that had the same problem as regular acrylic stuff – it filled, but maintained the look of what was underneath it.

Finally, I settled on paper mache. Haven’t done this since I was 7…but you just mix flour and water in a bowl, dip newspaper in it and layer it.

image

Which worked perfectly!

Afterwards I just spread black on it and drybrushed two kinds of metal and a bit of brown. It’s not great, but it’s good enough!

The End Result

Yeah, you’ve seen this one already…because stupidly, I didn’t get any other photos of it all. 😛

I don’t think I’m going to be a cosplay person, but I had fun putting it all together. 🙂

Malifaux – Performer

Given how many posts I have queued up, you probably won’t read this until after I’ve used the Performer at AdeptiCon!

I spent some time last week reading the story encounters for the Costume Event and wrote down some notes on how best to get victory points from the various strategies they’d designed. One thing that became apparent – there would be a lot of Interact Actions, and very few VPs from Strategies.

Because Interact can only be taken while not engaged, all an opponent who is trying to stop you has to do is get a model with a 3″ engagement near the Interact location and that Strategy is entirely blocked. If both players did this 100% successfully, the only points they could get would be from Schemes, and would limit the maximum points to 6.

Malifaux is a wonderous game that rewards the careful observer, so I took a look through the available models, both Mercenary and Arcanist, to find something that would help.

There were a few options, but the best one turned out to be the Performer. A 5ss Arcanist Mercenary, with some excellent usage as well as two very important abilitys: “Don’t Mind Me: This model may take Interact Actions while engaged.”, and a Wk of 5 The plan – keep her behind the lines (she’s a little fragile compared to the rest of my crew), get stuck in with my tanky models, and use her to claim the Strategy points. I won’t get 10 points from this plan, but if I can get a few extra points from the Strategy that my opponent is struggling to get, all the better!

image

After all of that thought process, I split a Colette box with Jamie. And because I didn’t think this performer would be caught dead working on the railroad, I had to come up with a basing scheme that worked for a higher class of lady than I’m used to working with. So I built a train station platform out of basswood!

AdeptiCon display board – Packaging!

This is just as much hobby as the rest of this stuff…Patrick came over Monday and we worked to fit our board into a board that would meet the Alaska Airlines Checked Baggage Requirements (less than 62 linear inches…).

He brought over a bicycle box and cut the shit out of it!

image

Wrapped the board itself in bubble wrap. We decided that the crystal labyrinth and castle (which is now finished!!) belonged in a separate piece of luggage, since they were still to tall and breakable.

After Patrick hobbied the crap out of the box.

Here’s hoping it makes it!

AdeptiCon Display Board – Backdrop

Two posts today, and one tomorrow, and the AdeptiCon coverage will continue in an incredibly rapid pace once I get back. (I have 3-4 posts backlogged already for AdeptiCon).

We cut a backdrop for the display board. The theory still being that taller is better and that a solid piece of something in the back would draw more attention. (And damn, does it look good!) I don’t have any photos of the completed piece, but I will definitely do so once our armies are set up on Friday!

I pulled the airbrush out again, figuring that it would have gotten over our dispute from the other day. I started with an Ice Blue, and mixed up a bunch of layers with Kantor Blue and Altdorf Guard Blue.

image

The airbrush worked out perfectly! gaaaaaah! It painted a nice, solid blue line where I wanted it to.

image

More blue, and I added some Mephiston Red at some point to head into purple.

image

I took a photo of my PSI at one point. I spent most of the time painting at this pressure, and it gave a nice solid line. I put it down to 30 at one point, and put a less solid line of the red around.

image

The final piece! It looks great on the display board! You’ll also notice some spots at the “top”, these are magnets which attach to the back of the board. We did this so that we didn’t have to transport a 15″ tall thing, and could instead pull everything off and transport the tall pieces separately.

Skull cannon…cannon.

It’s a penis cannon. You know it, I know it, everyone who looks at it knows it. My theory is that Patrick wins all of those painting awards because of his Penis Ratio, and I wanted to try to increase my own for my Daemon army. I don’t have quantity, but I do have quality. As in, my penis is bigger than all of his combined. (Also, he converted the Skull Cannon for me :P)

After the base coat I highlighted up the pink flesh with consecutive mixtures of Kislev Flesh and Bone White. Usually I wouldn’t mix up with white, but because the Kislev is already so bright, I didn’t feel like I had another choice. The primary problem with white is that it removes colour and leaves the surface looking pastel. But because my plan was to go back in with glazes, I felt that this was ok – there would be plenty of colour by the time I was done!

image

Cannon after all the highlighting.

image

Cannon after a single application of 1:1 Bloodletter:Water

I painted the Bloodletter:Water mixture into the recesses and the undersides of things. My next step is to do the Guilliman Blue, but to water it even more so that I don’t end up with parts that are blue
