Tournaments

OFCC 2014 – Day 2

Day 2 came early again. Tournaments are crazy because you stay up super late because you’ve got fun things to do, and because you’re excited for the next day and then you wake up super early because the organizers are trying to squeeze as much into a single day as they can. If you start at 10pm, run a 2800pt tournament with 3 games in it, with lunch and a mid-afternoon break, you’re ending at 9pm. It’s a tough call to make, and most people seem to be on the side of waking up early.

I only played one game on Sunday, because of our 5-person-4-person team. I thought of this only while watching Pete play my army — me sitting out the last game was perfect. As the worst player on my team, we’d naturally want to have our strongest players on the table at the end of the tournament when we would be playing against our strongest opponents. I didn’t plan it that way, but I was super happy with how it turned out! 🙂

After the jump, more photos!

I love all the colours here. My army will never have this kind of variety, but I like looking at it.

Big Pat’s unit getting some action from all sides. He says he would have won this combat if not for Troll Guts.

This was a nice looking Wood Elf army by John Kersey.

John’s tree people.

I voted for this army. His infantry needed a lot of work and his display board was very roughly painted, but the dinosaurs looked great and I loved how it was all set up. You look at it from 10 feet away and think “Holy crap, that’s a lot of dinosaurs!!”

A sweet steam tank.

I liked this guys contrast. Overall it was a darker Empire then I’m used to seeing, but he had lots of bright yellows around to provide visual interest. I voted for him as well.

P1280977

I don’t recall what thing is, but it’s a seriously sweet conversion for this Tomb Kings army.

P1280980

The Todd-painted Destroyer for Chris Powell’s army. Todd does lovely work, but I can’t vote for an army the owner didn’t paint.

This display board is gorgeous, and so is the army that goes in it. It has won a ton of awards, and it deserves to do so. But after a while, I prefer voting for new stuff rather than old stuff.

Game 4 I played against Ian Botts of DMBz Nutpunch. He and I first met earlier this year at Adepticon, where he destroyed me with 1200pts of Chaos Warriors! He’s a fantastic dude, and even though he removed 400pts of Cold One Cavalry in one Magic phase, I still had the best game of my weekend playing against him. I gave him my Favourite Opponent vote, but unfortunately I think that when you’re that friendly, you have 5 games and they’re all pretty damn amazing, and he had another game that beat mine out.

Game 5 I sat out and primarily watched Pete take apart a Chaos Dwarf army with my army. It was enlightening, because my army is “pretty soft”, and he still destroyed this dude. Pete’s just a good player, and it was a good match-up for him.

Pete, after deploying my army.

Jordan, last game.

P1280988

Scott. That is a shit ton of models on the table!

P1280992

Pete used my carnosaur as chaff against the Destroyer! His goal was to take as many skink shots as possible, and this 210pt sacrifice allowed another round of ~36 poison shots that avoided the Destroyers “re-roll successful wounds” ability.

P1280994

At first I didn’t like this 40k model in the Fantasy army. But the more I looked at it, the more I loved it. Chaos Dwarves are evil little engineers, and here’s this engineering device. I also wanted to have a photo of his lava bases, because they are cool.

We got every match-up we wanted in this game…except this one. Pat got thrown under the bus. As Pete told him after the game – “we had to give them one.” Sorry Pat!

CHOP!, bitches.
