Unit Filler – Test Model

I assembled a piece of unit filler as a test model for the proposed colour scheme of my daemons.

For the model, I basecoated…

  • Airbrushed Kantor Blue near the base. For the rest of the unit, I’m going to do a lighter colour so I can shade and highlight easier.
  • Airbrushed Stegadon Scale Green near the top. Same thing, I think I started to dark.
  • Airbrushed Sotek Green at the very top and it’s barely noticeable.

After that, I…

  • Took 1:1 Alaitoc Blue and my Acrylic Medium, and watered it to a thin consistency. I used this to highlight on the top of the model.
  • 1:1 Sotek Green and Acrylic Medium, watered to a thin consistency to highlight on the bottom of the model.
  • Note that the greens and blues are switched from basecoat to highlight. I’m tricksy.
  • The model didn’t have enough pop (see above, re: basecoat to dark) so I took some Ice Blue, thinned with water, to highlight further on the top.
  • This had a tendency to chalk, so I had to be very careful not to let any clumps dry. It was late, and this was difficult.
  • Ice Blue on the flamey bits.

This process has to be quick. I’m painting an army, not a masterpiece. I think that once I get my basecoat lighter, I’ll be able to do this much faster.

The completed model.

The base I tried to copy from Wappel again, and I think I did a great job! If you look at his progression, you can see the moment at which I thought “oh hell, there is no way this is going to work” (hint: it’s where the base is this brilliant green colour…)

My palette, partway through. The left is the bottom rock colour and the right is some of the progressions of the slate.

The base was tricky – I was experimenting, and I’m not certain I’d be able to do it again. Hopefully I can repeat the look, but maybe simplify the process.

  • Mix Sotek (or was it Stegadon? I forget >.<) with..
  • Fortress Grey. This was way to bright!
  • Mix in some Codex Grey to darken it. But couldn’t get it dark enough to cease my worrying. Went with it, and painted that on the model.
  • Added Ushapti Bone into this mix to highlight the stone out from the center.

When done this, I had a really bright pastel-green piece of stone. To bring the colour down I…

  • Mixed half a paintbrush of Black, 2 x Acrylic Medium and a bit of water to create a very thin mixture.
  • Same with some Rhinox Hide.
  • Paint these two on in very patient (*cough*) steps to darken and tint the base. I’m hoping I won’t need as much patience when I’m painting bases on 20 Horrors.
  • A bit of Waywatcher Green glaze in some spots, but while it looked neat when I did it, I felt like there was to much green already so I stopped.

The brown rocks were:

  • Snakebite Leather. This was way to bright, and still is.
  • Mixed some of the green/grey mixture into it and tried to shade.
  • Used the Black and Rhinox mixtures to darken this section as well.

That’s my plan. Looking at it again the next day, the Ice Blue needs some fixing, but it doesn’t need a dullcoat like I thought it did last night. I think this might be going somewhere!

Veer-myn – Final

Bought some lamps and new lights to replace my old ones this evening. Pulled out all of the photography equipment and here’s what I ended up with!

P1040989

The entire team! …they don’t have a name yet.

Took 4 photos of each of these models to make a little collage. You can click through the images to see larger versions, as always.

Striker composite

One of the strikers. There are 2 variants of this model.

Guard composite

One of the two guards. There is only one variant of guard.

The paint job on these guys was pretty quick. 3 layers on each area, base coat, wash down, highlight up and it was nice to get back to a workflow that I know pretty well and can do quickly.

After applying the transfers last night, I came back and used the matte medium to flatten out the gloss. Then I took a sponge and splattered on some Boltgun Steel and Umbral Umber to muddy the whole thing up.

Still really disappointed by the damned mold lines. I swear to you, I checked every model for those things and every time I turn a model around there’s another that I missed. There has to be a better way to find and remove them!

Lizardmen Temple Guard Final

I don’t recall when I started working on these guys. It was last year sometime I think. Actually…I could probably look this up, since I bought the unit shortly after the new temple guard were actually released. Looks like it was around February of 2009. So going on a year and a half.

However, at long last, I present…

Tyranid Hive Guard 3

Last post on this guy, since I’m calling him done.

Since the last post I added:

  • A 1:3 mixture of Hawk Turqoise and Scaly Green to the top edges of his skin, and every opening.
  • Goblin Green base rim, and some flock on top of the grey gravel.

It’s funny…looking at the photos, the pink and the green highlight are really stark. But sitting at my desk, while I’m painting them, they are relatively calm.

I’m wondering if next time I should paint the HT+SG highlight directly over the original SG base, and then wash over that. I worry that the highlight will get muted by the wash, and also that the skin will be ridiculously shiny (it will be – just a question of whether it’s bad or good ridiculous).

Looking at it now, I’m pretty happy with the green rim. When I was painting it I was thinking “Oh god…goblin green rims…how old is this army anyway?” It’s been years since I painted with the goblin green. But I think it’s a nice colour to go with the yellow and green of the model itself.

I’m really happy with how his armour turned out. More of that in the future.

Links to the other two posts, for ease of reference:

My next 40k project is to finish the Deff Koptas! That will be another project where I start writing when I’m already 3/4s of the way through, but there’s still some work to be done.

Ork Flash Git

I didn’t paint this one, but I wanted to share it and it’s tale anyway.

There was an auction at my local Games Workshop a couple weeks ago, along with some mini-games for prizes. They had as prizes some mail-order only models, and I knew there were about three things I wanted as prizes so I went down to see if I couldn’t make it happen.

I lost every single game. Poop.

Towards the end of the day, one of the local kids won a game and upon looking through the box of prizes realized that there was nothing he wanted. I was standing around and he asked if there was anything I wanted, and I sort of sputtered out “Oh yes!” and picked out the Ork Flash Git. I’m amazed – I’ve been known to give prizes that I don’t care about to kids, but that’s because I have a job and I can really afford to buy just about any model I happen to desire. Good kid.

At the auction, the last three things put up for auction were staff paint jobs, as they usually do, and there was one particular staffer who’s work I admire. I bid $10 on him up from $1 and won his work without a fight. As I paid my $10, I tossed the Flash Git at him, saying “I play Deathskulls”.

(At the end of the day I also purchased the Animosity Orks, so look for them in a painting/modelling project soon!)

Paint Scheme

  • I really have no idea, but I wanted to point out a couple awesome things he did.
  • The squig is my favourite part. Tiger squig! It also has a targeting reticule for an eye. Awesome.
  • The skin is incredibly well highlighted, I can’t even begin to figure out how many layers and what colours he used.
  • All of the metal has been painted it’s primary colour, and then has a little splotch of some metallic colour painted in random locations, where the paint has chipped.
  • He used a similar highlight scheme as the skin (with different colours) to paint the gun-barrel wood grain.
